I mean ultimately, yeah, there are huge issues with this as any other part of the Internet. How do we know what's actually going on on the ground? And then ultimately, how do we interpret it, how do we act on it? How does that matter? But ultimately, yeah, I'm not acting on it. So, I'm just seeing what's there. In Tehran, people are communicating… Right. Using their phones. Using Twitter. So, internally at least, this is significant. Correct? Right. Now, I heard that phone servers have been cut off. That it was impossible to communicate. But apparently that's not the case anymore that seems it seems to go up and down throughout If they just turn the phones off, how would people communicate? It seems like it's very easy to control this Yes, go ahead Bernie. I hit the red and again. We don't know for sure what any of these reports are true I've seen reports from several media outlets and again It could be just the media echo chamber reporting same stuff that they're all reporting together But I've heard that phone service is down for a while mobile some phone service is down for a while but then mobile phone service went up, but the Text messaging SMS was was shut down for a while and the internet access remained up but access to Certain social networking sites was made more difficult. So that would be worth. I think that's be worth exploring Try that really what happened because it's really interesting if a government or when a government finds some social unrest going on That puts certain people in power at risk of losing that power The government being able to shut down certain communications technologies to prevent people communicating and in organizing I find that fascinating and I'd like to find out more about what really happened I heard a similar thing off of various news outlets that about that. They actually were having They were trying to shut down access to certain social networking Services like Twitter, however, the people who are making use of these things are very resilient in their will to To not give in to this and so they're using third-party Services that'll reroute their text messages to Twitter and I understand something we can help with Yeah, I actually I don't have the document with me But we had there was a PDF released which basically said what you can do and what you can't do to help Here's the thing about the PDF the PDF again is written in English by Westerners, like I don't Westerners just because it's in English. There are plenty of people who are over there who also speak English and they want us to help Apparently. Yeah, and the signs are in English. I mean like Like a lot of the organization organizing is going on at universities There are plenty of English literate people and that seems to be a tactic as I've seen and protests around the world now It's same thing with the reporters in Korea There are signs in both Korean and in English because if it hits the American news media or the English news English language news media You know, it's easier for Westerners to understand it if it's I don't know specifically the document that you were looking at but I've seen many documents written Identifying the author as a Westerner explaining what I can allegedly do to help sure I'm not sure if that's it what I just threw it. Yeah This is the one this actually this is a from dot co dot UK And but the interestingly the URL begins Reine Kahn in which to me looks like it's Finnish actually So that's sort of who knows where this is coming from Finns. You're just getting their hands and everything, aren't they? Yeah, well Mark's not here today. He might be how do you spell that? Re I n I k a I n e n dot co dot UK okay, and In the URL goes on and on from there and some of the some of the Shortened URLs that I saw for this actually were had gone down and so they weren't good anymore but I mean among the things that are being advised by this document and who knows if it's true do not publicize proxy IPs over Twitter because That obviously makes it easier for them to be monitored and then taken down Authorities are actually monitoring Twitter. I mean, that's that's what their job is to monitor Twitter. It just sounds so crazy One of the things I heard was that the State Department actually got in touch with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security The State Department actually got in touch with people at Twitter because Twitter was going to go down at 2 p.m Or it's some some time that was actually not beneficial for people. It was midday for Iran it was in the middle of the night for the US and Among, you know the first the protesters started saying get Twitter not to go down at that hour and then You know ostensibly the protesters whoever we think were the protesters and then the story was that apparently the State Department also Contacted Twitter and said and that was in a journalistic article as I remember and said, you know, please don't go down at this hour So Twitter actually rescheduled their maintenance time despite the fact that they were it was actually their server that needed You know the people hosting their server farm that needed them to go down Yeah, I saw that notice and I was wondering how that might affect things over in Iran Um, the one thing that I really wonder about all this I've only started using Twitter recently some of you've been on there longer but watching the watching the Iran land I ran election tags and Other things it there is just so much out there jamming the radar now You don't know what's coming from where everything's retweeted from somewhere else What what are the ways you use to actually parse through what you're reading and make some sense out of the whole mess? I mean, there's there's some sort of interesting things One of the things I was thinking about was that yeah We did hear from time to time that Twitter was blamed being blocked I found it interesting to follow the traffic patterns on Twitter and see how many tweets I was getting It could mean that things are just getting quieter over there or with whoever or that somebody is mimicking patterns But it could be that you know, the the stream is being choked off and throttled at some point And so we are hearing less there was one What appeared to be a news source in Tehran? It might have been a community journalist But that particular Twitter stream went down routinely or was was was throttled back at times And so that appeared to be maybe indicating what was going on But I don't know. I mean, you know, it's what are our criteria? My other criterion is, you know, does it look like it came from the street? You know, there are things that are more interesting to people on the street like there are cops outside or there is tear gas outside whereas something like, you know, the location of a head of state or where a protest is going to be I think is more interesting for Higher up powers to twiddle with because if you can mess that up, you can mess up the protest itself Whereas if you say, you know, there's well actually the same thing if there's cops outside You know that could also be have a chilling effect of people in the street Talking about government surveillance of Twitter I remember hearing about another way to help out would would be for people all around the world to change their location to Tehran Therefore making it harder for the authorities to figure out what tweets are coming from Iran Irani citizens and Then make it them have a harder time Well, do they based that just on your word that you're in Tehran? I thought it was based on IPS that they figure that this is just something I heard I personally don't have a Twitter account. So I'll defer to the Twitter yeah, I don't know. I mean like I I don't know I wouldn't know either if that was happening I mean if you were a proxy if that's the case if the idea was that the the Government was going after individual Twitter accounts then yes It's to be it'd be easier to identify the ones that are in Tehran that way But I'm not sure if that's what's happening only imagine activists of the past in the 1960s hearing this conversation back then wondering what in God's name has happened where we're talking about Twitter ring and and The sites being being monitored by authorities and it's just it's incredible the idea is still there That's this that the mentality is the same, you know, people are trying to get information out and organize, but it's just wow It's it's well, are we surprised by this people always use the technology that's available to them, you know in the 60s It was a mimeograph machine or whatever if I'm off by 20 years one way or the other I apologize But but you know what people always use the technology that's available Machines during Tiananmen Square people were trying to jam those and Yes, go ahead Bernie I heard a reporter. I think was an NPR reporter was reporting from Iran a few days ago a couple days ago who said that after Access to Twitter was a made more difficult and I should not Twitter. I'm sure X after the text messaging was SMS messaging was made more difficult or not available at all that said that night Night of the I guess the night after the announcement was that the the incumbent remained in power? People were standing on their rooftops shouting Where there was going to be a protest and so forth There's just sort of like a smoke signal kind of thing people would shout from one rooftop That's somebody a few new technology there Yeah So they were tweeting off their roofs Right, and it was spreading across the city from rooftop to rooftop But which I thought was an interesting use of some of the oldest technology around now if if Twitter does get blocked In a particular country a particular city. How hard is it? I mean the the idea behind Twitter is is is amazingly simple How hard is it for somebody to simply start something else and spread word about that and and just replace it? The answer is it's not very hard at all There's free software like look Hanukkah that can basically create Twitter clones fairly easily But the issue is that you have to get people to know about them. Uh-huh. Yeah, that's the thing How do you get the word out to two people? Well from what I've heard so far a lot of people in Iran are already depending on that because they can't necessarily Easily Twitter to the real Twitter has to be rerouted, right? So they have to make something else and then so for that for all we know a traffic could be quieting down because some Clones may not be plugged in. I'm like you mentioned a way of getting this this clone type software. What is that exactly? It's called look Hanukkah. I don't know a whole lot about it So I don't want to start making stuff up, but people can look for it. How do you spell a conica? What can L a C o n I C a maybe we'll see about that could be wrong All right, I'll find them by the way To zero nine two nine hundred we're taking phone calls on this and other topics Yes, not right. So, uh, then I guess the revolution is happening in 140 characters or less Which seems so? And it would be would be digitized as well and all that kind of thing So I said again, I think they did put that on a t-shirt actually already did that it just means so much more now All right, two one two two zero nine two nine hundred. And of course, we are continuing to Celebrate North Korea's ascension into the World Cup in 2010. It's nothing funny. Dara. This is serious And it's the last time this happened was 1966 funny in a very serious way and they made it all the way to the quarterfinals then to Yeah, it's a little sappy. I know but It's a great day over there Perhaps too early for me to ask if you have a North Korean telephone song for the end of the show No, you know, I was looking for one and the internet can find a lot of things But it could not cannot find a North Korean telephone song. I tried I really did and I've looked through my whole North Korean selection It's very hard to browse through it quickly, but I don't think there are any I can't understand the words But no phone sound effects outside, but it's not too early in North Korea If anyone there wants to call us, it's I think 746 in the morning over there exactly 12 hours ahead of us and people There are I'm sure spontaneously bursting into song and dance in the streets. All right, two one two two zero nine two nine hundred Let's um, let's take a phone call Good evening, you're on off the hook. Yeah, I got a Twitter account for about 10 years. Oh my goodness Do you know who that is? Do you recognize that voice? You recognize that voice that Gus you've never heard this voice before you've can you believe this rebel? She's never heard your voice before Well, hopefully it'll stay that way What's on your mind Wasn't that before Twitter even existed you had a Twitter account Wow, well, I know Joe King who's coming on after us and the personal computer show has a story about when he first got Involved with Twitter and I think it was more recent than that. I don't know if it's back in the 90s That seems a little far-fetched How have you been rebel? Are you staying out of trouble help? Of course I've been working so I couldn't really call in or come to 2600 meetings Oh, well work is good. Then you know, the good economy is just keeping people at work now, you know I guess it used to be, you know, I come to 2600 meetings on Friday afternoons and you know You know, definitely even listening to off the hook, but you know You know, I just Things have been getting busy here where I'm working and it was so good catching up again, and we must do this again sometime soon Let's go on to another phone. Oh, I'm sorry. Yeah. That's good evening. You're on off the hook. Go ahead Hello. Yes, what's on your mind? Well, I would I want to comment on this issue about Twitter and the authenticity of the post Okay, let's turn down your radio and you can do you can do just that you're on here now Okay, go ahead. Um, I just happen to be listening and at the same time reading something on the web That was sort of related to this There's a website who charting stocks their normal mission is to chart stocks but it happened that they were curious in exactly the same way you are about whether the About the authenticity of the posts and they did some investigation and this is what they claim they said that they have they their investigation shows that Let me see. I am I decided to I narrowed it down to a handful of people who had accounted for 30,000 Iran Related tweets in the past few days. Each of them had something strikingly similar Each of them had created their Twitter accounts on Saturday, June 13th Each had extremely high number of tweets since creating their profiles Iran election was each of their most popular keyword with some very small Exceptions each were posting in English half of them had this exactly the same profile photo Each had thousands of followers with only a few friends. Most of their friends were each other Interesting and it says I narrowed the spammers down to three of the most persistent I could read more but I think this is important not knowing the technology and he gives at stop Amid it at Iran rigged election at change underscore for underscore Iran and then he gives a few others as well And I've seen we've seen a couple of those that is a really good point and that's the beginning I think of really good efforts to understand what's going on I think what we need now and I don't know how to do this is to begin to tie those two domains Where are those? You know addresses tweeting from and who can help us figure that out because I think that's important Yes, I think that's sort of where this guy was going which of course is what the press should be doing but never do Yeah, the press is just basically catching on to Twitter about now and figuring out what that's all about let alone this Thanks for your call. You're welcome. All right, two one two two zero nine two nine hundred. Good evening. You're on off the hook Yes, speak up the first song that you please at the national anthem of North Korea No, I would not play the national anthem and speak over it. That's that would be unwise No, it's it does various patriotic and inspirational songs I'm sorry. I just have a whole CD of just their numbers, but they're just numbers of tracks. Um, I don't have two names I'm sorry, I wish I did I really do good evening. You're on off the hook Speak up, please You there? Okay. Well, you know, we're gonna move on to another call then. Good evening. You're on off the hook Hi, good. Good evening. I done a couple of things. I might have observed Um, it's too bad that Bernie has to click in at the Canada because I understand that Canada's not have to go digital until 2011. Yeah, you could go. Was that why you're going up there Bernie to watch analog TV Analog TV said I just couldn't help it. Oh my god, and um Amazon had a site I was up on Amazon trying to get a last last of the minute converter and Amazon had an actual countdown clock like New Year's Eve countdown to digital in hours minutes hours minutes and seconds It may still be up there may be counting up plus now And I'm in I do as far as losing channels I know that cable vision of Woodbury which serves a good chunk of Nassau about a year ago already dropped their public access channel channel channel 20 and also about a month ago to two other channels were dropped MSNBC and Oh MSNBC was dropped from Canada. I don't think so. Yes. Yes. It was Yes, it was in fact in its place that they had a sign saying you need to not need a box. Oh, okay If you don't have the box, yeah, that's I was referring to before you need to have it. Okay Right Also, um, I think the money that's going to be made is not so much in our new ATSC tuners, but in good antennas if you live in a fringe area or marginal such as maybe between 25 to 50 miles out of a transmitter I Good antenna is critical and you may need a powered antenna and that's where the money is going to be made I think they're practically getting tuners away Wow, okay It sounds like it's getting difficult for somebody to just have a TV set in their house without all these other Things I need to get it to run. That's right. Portables are a thing of the past unless you have a new powered antenna That's very ultra compact. Uh-huh. Okay. Thanks. Thanks for your call Actually, we got a letter from somebody who wrote to us at OTH at 2600 comm You last program discussed the end of analog TV actually our last 50 programs discussed the end of TV A couple of questions issues. Is it true that the regular airwaves will now be turned over to law enforcement Bernie? Do you want to answer that question? It's only it's a long answer to a short question. I'll make it a short answer No, it's not. It's not true. Only a small portion. It may be at the most 20 some percent in the low 20% of that of that spectrum is 700 low a hermit or Hertz band of frequencies that were freed up by Channels TV analog stations moving to lower UHF channels or some VHF channels moving to lower UHF channels some of those were sold off to companies like a Verizon and AT&T By the FCC and an option and some of them were a small portion of them were reallocated for public service public safety use but the radios and the technology to the radios to use those frequencies for Public safety won't be available for at least a couple of years There's no squabbling as to how it's going to get deployed and something else Which speaking of Verizon? You might see those ads all over the place from cable companies saying that we offer New York one or we offer news 12 and Fios does not well Verizon this week announced that they're gonna be starting a station in New York called Verizon Fios one which is gonna be a new station that's run by Verizon So just it never ends with the corporate competition here. We had one more letter from someone on this subject I live in the Rochester New York area You may find it interesting to know that I am still receiving some analog television signals These signals are not coming from any of the major networks I'm getting the home shopping network. It barely comes in but there's a severely degraded picture without audio PBS has something in Spanish on how to set up your converter box, which doesn't do the English speakers much good There's a Christian channel. It comes in fuzzy with good quality audio I never watched this before so I don't know if it's coming in any better now than before and Then some other random channel that had a concert on at the time which could be a Canadian channel So this listener gets snow for all the other channels So definitely some changes and I want to thank those people for sending in their observations Let's see if we can squeeze in one or two more phone calls two one two two zero nine two nine hundred. Good evening You're on off the hook Three quick comments and then I'll hang up and listen 87.7 which used to be Channel 6 in Philly is now a disco station in New York City. It's 87.7 Wait, you able to get that in Philadelphia now No, they're a disco station in New York. We are I live up in the pirate station. No, it's not a pirate station It's it's a low-power TV station broadcasting on Channel 6 that plays music and basically they sneak their way onto the FM dial doing this It was very smart. Ah, yeah I'm sorry, where you located caller? I'm in the Poconos. I think it most of the New York City station Okay. So yeah, that station has an amazing range at that frequency. Well, no, I mean I'm talking about digital TV I pick up digital TV out in New York at Poconos, but I do invest in a elaborate antenna and amplifier as the guy before said Also, I lost Channel 7 and 11 during the switch. I'm sorry and You're talking about the surveillance before last week Isn't it kind of a joke to just talk about email and the telephones when they have like WBA I New York 99.5 FM. Okay well, we had to erase the end of that sentence, but Basically, he's asking about satellite Monitoring of people I'm sorry, we seem to have lost him as well. Any any comments on that? Oh that that sounds like the NSA program echelon, but that really doesn't have much to do with what we were talking about What we were talking about is the government, you know taking a look at Twitter's tweets and uh using that to get a heads-up on the protests and And so on Emmanuel. Yes, very briefly with it. Let's call his last question Just a week or two ago. Janet Napoleone are our director of Homeland Security. She basically shut down Movement by state local and federal law enforcement having access to military Surveillance a military optical surveillance satellites were like up, you know imagery satellite imagery there was a program within the Department of Homeland Security that would allow local state and federal law enforcement to have access to to basically national security type Satellite imagery and they keep mostly to shut that down saying there's been no oversight of this at all This could be just a real mess since there's no oversight and she's not gonna let it happen. Okay, unfortunately we're just about out of time and Yeah, you know much as I want to play a North Korean song going out We're not going to do that but we will say that we'll be back again next week talking about all kinds of other issues of importance to To the technological world to the social world things like that. You can write to us OTH at 2600 calm and stay tuned for the personal computer show and Again, congratulations to the North Korean soccer team making to the World Cup, but we're gonna go out with a song about phones instead Don't hang up. No, no. Oh, don't you do it now. Don't hang up. No, no. Don't hang up like you always do. Girl, you think I want you to. I'll explain the facts to you. Don't hang up. Give me a chance so our romance is true. Don't hang up. No, no. Oh, don't you do it now. Don't hang up. No, no. I took a walk with Mary Lou. We ran around to visit you. She had some voice I never knew. Don't hang up. Let's go for a ride, so baby, I want you. Now I've left the record office. I had to be a sport. We talked and we did the talks and you walked in. And I was lost. Don't hang up. No, no. Oh, don't you do it now. Don't hang up. No, no. Girl, you've got something sweet in you. I bet you've got love in you. Don't dance like you always do. Don't hang up. You've got one chance so our romance is true. Then you walked in. And you were caught. Don't hang up. No, no. Oh, don't you do it now. Don't hang up. No, no. I didn't say our love was true. What if we made a couple do? Cause making up is fun to do. Don't hang up. Cause no one else will ever do but you. Don't hang up. No, no. Oh, don't you do it now. Don't hang up. No, no.
